Can You Do It All?

You shouldn't do it all yourself. “You can drive a car with your feet, but that doesn’t make it a good idea!”~ Chris Rock (edited version)

You are a capable person.  If you set your mind to it, there is nothing that you can’t accomplish.  Entrepreneurs develop a spirit of freedom and possibility during the course of their lives.  They have a strong belief that they can do it all or at least, that’s what they would like to believe.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that if you are running a business or have aspirations to start one, then you are a pretty smart person.  Having intelligence is certainly an asset.  It can also be a liability.  Smart people think they can do it all and here’s the kicker of it all, they’re right.

Take the accounting functions of your business as an example.  I am pretty confident that anyone reading this blog can learn to be effective with the accounting of their business.  What I am saying is, you can learn it at an above average level.  But you don’t love accounting, do you?  OK maybe some of you do but definitely most don’t.

I worked in a sales position selling products and services that I wasn’t crazy about for nearly 10 years and was able to do that at an above average level.  I got raises, received promotions and carved a decent life for myself.  All because I could something very good.

Jim Collins calls good the enemy of great in his book “Good To Great”.  In the book Unique Ability, the good people at Strategic Coach, call very good an enemy to truly being your best.

Being able to do things at a very good or good level trick us into thinking that we can do it all.  This causes us to wear hats in our business well beyond the time that we should be wearing them.

This is something we address in our coaching with our three dimensional questioning of business owners by asking the question; what do you need to stop doing?

Articulating the answer to the stop doing question is the first step towards walking fully in your Soul Purpose and doing the work you are great at.  Not good, great.  Put together your list of your most high impact activities and start building your work around that and build a team to handle the rest.  Can you do it all?  The right question is, should you? What are the activities that you are doing right now that are keeping you from standing out?
