You Are The Captain Of Your Ship

You have control over the outcomes of your business. You started a business because you wanted freedom and you wanted to create the type of value in the world that is easier to do when you build a business around yourself.  In addition to those worthy goals, you also want control.  Control to do what you want, when and how you want to do it.  A business owner is the captain of their ship.

As you already know, being the captain of your ship isn’t all fun and games.  You have accountability and responsibility.  Even if you don’t hold yourself accountable someone, or something else, will.

As the captain, it’s easy to lose focus on the things you can control and you instead lose focus and worry about things that you have no control over.  Things like other people’s decision and past experiences.

Business owners have to stay focused on those areas of their business that they have control over.

You have control over the course that you set with your vision.

You have control over how you spend your time.

You have control over the objectives that you set for your business.

You have control over the culture that is created in your work environment.

You have control over how closely you watch your money.

I just watched my Boston Celtics beat up on the Miami Heat last night.  Why did they win?  Focus.  Miami worries to much about things they can’t control like referees calls.  What they haven’t learned is how to focus on things they can control like getting back on defense.

If you don’t like your results, change your actions.  Your results mirror your actions.  Your results don’t mirror someone else’s actions and vice versa.  This is one of the greatest pieces of advice  that I ever received.  How are you going to captain your ship today?  The cool thing is that it’s your choice.

  1. “How are you going to captain your ship today?”

I’ll take after legendary copywriter, John Carlton:

Writer’s block won’t be my pathetic excuse. I’m just going to make a great headline, write the sales letter, and attract customers with that sales letter.
