Have you ever thought that you had a marketing problem in your business? If you are like most business owners, at some point you have had some concern over how well your company is marketing. When it comes to marketing, there are plenty of strategies and tactics that can produce great results for driving new business. One strategy that should always be present, however, is the need to be intentional with your marketing.
An intentional business is a focused business and marketing is no different. One of the first place to look if you are concerned with the overall performance of your marketing is to at how consistent your marketing efforts are. Here are some questions to ask yourself about your marketing efforts to help your business be more intentional going forward.
- Do I have a marketing schedule? Everyone on your team should know what is happening in your marketing and when. Successful businesses have consistent rhythms and schedules for when they do things, marketing included.
- Who’s in charge? I have asked the question “Who’s the boss?” in the past and this concept rings true for marketing who’s running the marketing.
- If you are in charge of marketing are you actually running it? If you are only in charge of marketing in name only then you need to step back and come up with a better plan to lead the initiative. No one else in your business is going to take the lead unless it’s their job to do so.
- Are we measuring ROI and tracking other useful data? Marketing without measuring is like my morning without coffee…you just shouldn’t do it. Make sure that you are reviewing your marketing’s performance.
- Do you have a plan? A good plan starts with asking what you need your marketing to accomplish. Do you need more customers? Great exposure in a certain market? Do you need to increase your authority? What is it that you are trying to accomplish with your marketing?
- Who are you marketing to? Knowing who you are speaking to makes all the difference with where and how you market to people.
Most business owners that I work with don’t have a specific marketing plan and they suffer from inconsistent results. If your businesses’ marketing efforts are underperforming, take a step back and assess all the components of your marketing system and ask yourself if there are areas where you can create more intention. Once you create that intention, more consistent results will follow.
