What’s your business plan?

We have spent some time talking about one end of the business planning spectrum, the person who doesn’t want to do anything because they don’t know how to do it.  The other side of the person who doesn’t do anything is the person who doesn’t start becuase their plan isn’t perfect.

I am sure all of us know someone like this.  The person who takes no action with putting together their business plan because there may be some holes in their process.  Or they worry about the uncertainty of their businesses success.  The hardest part about dealing with someone like this is that they are usually pretty smart well put together people.  They just can’t make a move in the face of any uncertainty at all.  I had dinner with someone like this about a week ago.  They have a ton of ability and actually know pretty well what they want to achieve and who they want to affect but they don’t want to be held accountable to putting the plan into motion.  It’s a shame because this particular person isn’t getting any younger.

A straightforward first step tp putting your plan into reality is to get it down on paper and share it with people that you know and start making it real.

The other crucial item for the people I described above is to get over the fact that your business will not run perfectly out of the gate.  You can minimize the number of times you fail but playing to your strengths which is in planning but don’t let planning take over.  You have to velocitize your mistakes.  The quicker you make them, the quicker you can get past them and go on to the next task.  Without doing this your business can’t move forward as effectively.

So repeat after me…failure is OK.  How you deal with the misstep is the important part.  Think of it this way.  Are you living the life you want to live?  Do you feel like your talents are utilized to the fullest in what you are currently doing?  If the answer is no.  What are you waiting for?  No one is going to do it for you and you don’t want that anyway.  You’re not getting any younger.
