Have you ever thought about starting a business and then wondered what you could actually do out in the marketplace? Have you ever stopped wondering about it as soon as you realized that the answer wasn’t sitting right in front of your face? The reality is that for some, a business opportunity does fall into your lap. For most it does not.
For the people where the business does seem to fall into their lap, I would bet that in the majority of the cases, they put themselves in a position to receive the opportunity. It didn’t just materialize into thin air. What to do for the rest who may need to do a little work to discover our business platform? I will give a couple of quick suggestions.
The first is don’t do it alone. Find a coach or a mentor who can help you identify blind spots in your life. Typically these people are able to better recognize your ability, usually because other people value your talents more than you do. They will also make sure that you are staying on course and working towards your goals.
The second thing is in writing down your talents. If you can’t figure out what they are, the easiest thing to do is to ask people you know. You will learn a ton just from that exercise. Don’t worry about it sounding like an attempt to fish for compliments. As you formulate your talent list start thinking about what you can do with your talents more productively than you have been doing.
Carve out some time in the morning and ask yourself two questions. Who do I know as a mentor? This could even be an organization. Do I have a firm grip on what my talents and passions are? Get clear on this and get more clear on the rest of your life.
